NOVEL Lung Trial - XVIVO Perfusion - XVIVO Perfusion

Lung transplants are one of the most difficult transplant procedures to coordinate. The availability of donor lungs is limited, and many donor lungs do not pass the initial screening process that determines if they are healthy enough for a traditional lung transplant. Ex vivo gene therapy is a type of gene therapy which is performed exterior to the patient’s body. Gene modification is done outside the body. In vivo gene therapy is another type of gene therapy which is done directly when the defective cells are still in the body.

Ex vivo conditions allow experimentation on an organism's cells or tissues under more controlled conditions than is possible in in vivo experiments (in the intact organism), at the expense of altering the "natural" environment. 2.1.2 Ex vivo Model. An ex vivo model is ethically advantageous, requires no postsurgical animal care, enables more reproducibility between lesions, and provides a tightly controlled artificial environment for regeneration studies.
